When I was playing in a power trio and someone requested “The Boys Are Back in Town,” I was in a bit of a bind. What to do about those cool harmonized leads? Well, the moves here will give you everything you need to play the recurring motif (bars 1 and 2) and the harmonies at the end. You’ll need to mix up the phrasing to really nail it but you’ll hear the line as soon as you try these grips. Bash a D and an E7sus for the turnaround and it won’t be long ’til summer comes.

GRANGE ROVER

If you ever wanted to grab a piece of Jimmy Page’s low-string bends on “The Rover,” check this out. This is similar to his slinky moves on that awesome tune. The D–string bends go up to a G#, but it’s Page-ier to stop somewhere between a Gn and a G#. Lean into the ending measure and don’t worry if the Bs on the unison bend aren’t quite in tune. That’s all it takes, that’s all it takes!

ON AGAIN, OFF AGAIN

Quick Licks repeat offender Walt Kosar provided this infectious batch of notes. “Here’s a cool-sounding lick that uses a G major pentatonic scale. It incorporates finger stretches, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and repeated notes on adjacent strings. Follow the fingering provided and look to incorporate even phrasing on both articulated and non-articulated notes. This lick creates a smooth-flowing and trippy sound using a different application of a common scale.
