gp0410_Depts_rants_MB_nrMarcus Bonfanti has been making noise in the nouveau Brit blues world with his gritty vocals, solid tunes, and gut-level guitar work. He produced this record and went for stripped-down, honest guitar textures. He covers a lot of stylistic ground, with most of it coming across as bluesy as opposed to straight blues. Like many gigs, he doesn’t totally settle into a groove until a few songs in, where his slide work on “Devil Girl” sits right in the pocket with a pretty tone and sweet intonation. Bonfanti blazes on the slap-back rave-up “Tweed Blazer,” and layers gorgeous guitars on “Get Behind Me” (a tune that would be at home on a Gregg Allman record). This guy definitely seems to have gotten the message that honesty and emotion trump pretty much everything else and that’s what he brings. The Guitar Label.
