The multi-talented Hornsby returns to pop (after jazz and bluegrass excursions) with a cadre of concentrated songs capably interpreted by his road band of eight years (which includes bassist J.V. Collier and drummer Sonny Emory). Peak points include “Cyclone,” which revives the classic sound of Hornsby’s Range; the bass/piano bass-riff-driven “Simple Prayer”; the Collier and Emory co-written workout “Space is the Place”; and “Continents,” an epic ballad in three with Collier stretching on the extended rideout.
