Howe He Did It
Launching a ten-city Japan tour this month with fusion ninjas Dennis Chambers (drums) and Tetsuo Sakurai (bass), and having held several high-profile lead-guitar gigs (including Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, *NSYNC, and Enrique Iglesias), Greg Howe is obviously fluent in many styles, including pop, shred, and jazz. Remarkably, though, he has had almost no formal musical training. So how did he become so damn versatile?
“When it comes to what people should do or study to improve their skills, I honestly believe that if someone is really into something, they don’t need to be directed,” says Howe. “They’ll seek it out in their own way and find it. For example, if someone truly wants to learn how to address Coltrane changes, there are a number of different ways to go about doing that, and they’ll soon latch onto the way that works for them. The key thing is to really want it and know you really want it. Pursue whatever that is, and you’ll get it.”
