About GPTV

About

Learn more about www.GuitarPlayerTV.com and the channels being featured this month, and no one better suited than guest host Larry Carlton to give you the scoop. Larry Carlton is perhaps the most versatile guitarist walking the planet today. With more than 3,000 studio sessions, a couple of dozen solo albums and several Grammy nominations under his belt, Carlton is the consummate artist. Larry’s played with the Crusaders, Joni Mitchell, John Lennon, Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Steely Dan and even Dolly Parton to name but a few. Tune in Larry’s own channel, Mr. 335 for insight and performances.

Zappa Plays Zappa

Dweezil Zappa

Dweezil Zappa loves the fact that many bands across the globe regularly perform the music of his legendary father, Frank, but on the new Zappa Plays Zappa tour (also featuring Steve Vai on guitar), he aims to do Zappa fans around the world proud by delivering his dad’s challenging compositions as close as possible to how they were intended to be played. In these clips, shot by GP Associate Editor Darrin Fox, Dweezil demos some of Frank’s most treasured gear and trickiest riffs.

The Wonderful World of Oz Noy

Oz Noy

Originally hailing from Israel, New York City Strat master and session wiz Oz Noy infuses his singular brand of jazz/rock with powerful rhythms and (with help from a huge pedalboard full of the hippest guitar effects) psychedelic timbres. Shot at his weekly gig at the Bitter End in Manhattan, these live clips catch Oz in action with a fabulous backing band that features bass ninjas Will Lee and James Genus, and drum powerhouses Anton Fig and Keith Carlock.

Bresh TV

Bresh

Thom Bresh is a multi-faceted entertainer, singer, songwriter, recording artist, impressionist, and instrumentalist with an eventful career stemming from the tender age of three. He is the son of legendary Hall of Fame guitar great "Merle Travis," and can recreate that famous "Travis style" with an incredible Bresh twist. Thom says, "There's no feeling on earth that compares with the energy exchange between an entertainer and the audience. I am fortunate enough to do what I love most: pick my guitar, sing my songs, tell my stories, and share some tears and laughs with an audience." Spend some quality time with the quintessential Thom Bresh over 12 episodes.

Wylde Man

Wylde

It’s not much of a secret that Ozzy Osbourne and Black Label Society guitarist Zakk Wylde is aptly named. His speed, technique, and sheer aggressive force are awe-inspiring and thrilling to watch. GPTV’s Wylde Man channel offers an exclusive peek into Zakk’s world, as Guitar Player Associate Editor Jude Gold filmed the shred demon recording his latest album, and also got him to demonstrate some of his most jaw-dropping solos.

Mr 335

Carlton

Consummate guitarist, educator and composer, Larry Carlton shares some of the experience and insight gleaned over 30 years as a top session and recording artist. Synonymous with Gibson’s E335, Larry has won NARAS’ Most Valuable Player award so may times that they had to retire him from eligibility. Carlton’s never been more on top of his game than today as these performance and interview segments will testify to.

McGuinn's Den

McGuinn

Roger McGuinn of the Byrds knows a thing or two about both television and the internet as a means to engage attention. As leader of the Byrds, he and his band mates burst onto the scene on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1965, electrifying both a folk song and rock fans, about a year after the Beatles played that very same stage. Somewhat less well known is Roger's history, as a folk artist, before the Byrds. Over the course of 15 episodes, McGuinn's Den reveals Roger's passion for folk music, home recording and the music business at large. You'll even be treated to several magical performances.

Encores!

Encores

Our Encores channel is the place you’ll really want to visit regularly, because here is where you’ll see exciting performances from big stars, up-and-coming artists, and talented unknowns. This month on Encores you’ll tune into Stephen Bennett, Muriel Anderson, Nick Moss, Duke Robbilard and Gil Parris to name but a few. Someday, you could be on this channel. All you have to do is send an e-mail to gptv@truefire.com for submission details.

Jazz Anatomy

Jazz Anatomy

Jazz Anatomy decodes the structure of jazz guitar revealing a remarkably clear approach for comping, melodic development and improvisation. Your professor of Jazz Anatomy is Mimi Fox—phenom player, brilliant educator and top recording artist. Just Jazz Guitar hails her playing as "jazz guitar at its best" and she chairs the guitar department at the Jazz School in Berkeley...Fox has all the chops.

Blues Alchemy

Blues Alchemy

As anyone who squeaked through 10th grade history knows, the alchemists were a semi-scientific posse of medieval individuals utterly hung up on the notion of transforming lead into gold. Of course, their efforts did not lead to economic good times, but Blues Alchemy addresses a much more useful and likely kind of transformation: turning those leaden, everyday blues licks and chord progressions into tasty and intriguing improvisational gold. Master blues alchemist David Hamburger will teach you how to transform your blues bag into gold by learning how to target tones and "play the changes."

Rock Tricks

Rock Tricks

Jeff Scheetz is one of the few top notch performing and studio artists who can also expertly communicate the what, why and how of modern rock guitar. Scheetz exploded on the scene a few years back as the "Hot Pick" of the major guitar pubs. He now tours the Jeff Scheetz band, has several CDs to his credit, authored countless educational articles and conducts clinics around the world. No one better than Scheetz to unravel the "tricks" of the rock trade.

Jazzed Blues Assembly Lines

Jazzed Blues Assembly Lines

Mark Stefani's Assembly Lines covers funky rhythm and blues stylings and fretboard concepts of top players like George Benson, Kenny Burrell and Grant Green. First we'll break down the 12-bar blues progression into logical sections and then builds your vocabulary of versatile jazzed blues phrases, which can played over I, IV and V-IV-I changes. Once your vocabulary of phrases is up to snuff, you'll assemble the phrases into four full-chorus solos that will turn heads at the next session or jam.

Gypsy Guitarre

Gypsy Guitarre

Gypsy jazz guitar is very much alive and well thanks to the young players who embrace the style made popular by Django many years ago—and no one does it better than Joscho Stephan from Germany. "The first thing about Joscho that strikes the listener is the incredible cleanliness of his fingering execution. No matter how fast and intricate, no technical demands seem to ruffle this monster chopster in the least." With his father Günter (rhythm guitar) and Max Schaaf (double bass), Joscho’s CD ‘Swinging Strings’ was the CD of the month in Guitar Player Magazine. Gypsy Guitarre shows off Joscho's vision and energy over 8 exhilarating episodes.

Blue Grooves

Blue Grooves

The objective of Blue Grooves is to convey the subtleties of playing over various blues styles focusing on both the most appropriate rhythm patterns and vibe for corresponding improvisational solos. Although you will learn ten new blues instrumental tunes to add to your repertoire, Blue Grooves also teaches the skills necessary to develop a big blues bag of tasty solo and rhythm chops.
