This latest addition to the A-T 20 Series is a stereo microphone featuring dual unidirectional condenser capsules in an X/Y configuration. The capsules pivot to facilitate either narrow (90- degree) or wide (120-degree) stereo operation, and fold down for safe storage in the included pouch. Also provided are a 5/8" stand clamp, a short proprietary XLRF mic cable terminated in a 1/8" TRS connector, and a “fuzzy” windscreen. A single AA battery powers the unit (the mic cannot be used with phantom power). According to the documentation the AT2022 ($439 retail/$249 street) has a frequency response of 20Hz-20kHz, a 103dB dynamic range (1kHz at max SPL), and a 75dB signal-tonoise ratio (1kHz at 1 Pa). A 3-position switch selects Off, Flat response, or L-Cut (low-frequency roll-off at 150Hz).

I connected the AT2022 to a Kodak Zi8 video camera, a Boss Micro BR digital recorder, and an Olympus VN-6000 Voice Recorder. I used it to record a small ensemble (quietly amplified electric guitar, 12-string acoustic guitar, and hand percussion) from ten feet away, a Guild 12-string acoustic two feet away, and several people sitting around a coffee table conversing with the mic in the middle. The AT2022 did an admirable job of capturing all of the sound sources, exhibiting a smooth and well-balanced frequency response—though placing the mic closer to the sources produced a deeper and fuller sound in all cases. The stereo separation was appreciable on both narrow and wide settings, with most of the directionality naturally happening towards the high end. The mic was also very quiet, especially with the L-Cut engaged.

The AT2022 is an excellent choice for anyone desiring to significantly up the audio quality of recordings made using recorders and video cameras with 1/8" TRS mic inputs—be it documenting rehearsals and gigs, producing superior demo videos, tracking with a portable rig, location recording, or podcasting.
